Tour Details

From the parking lot we hike up to Kälbereck. Crossing the north-west-ridge we reach the Schafreuter after round about 3h and hopefully enjoy a nice view of the Karwendel area. Have a first glance at it at Peakfinder.org.
On the way down via the south-east-ridge (some scrambling / fixed rope) with its 'Steinmanderln' we can do a quick stop at Toelzer Huette (which is already closed). Let’s have a look at the winter-room and enjoy some food before heading back to our cars.

Tour Report

It was a glorious morning at the feet of Mt. Schafreuter. We parked at around 850m and started the hike full of energy and enthusiasm. We made our way up a winding trail through dense woods. Less than 5 minutes later people had already begun pausing to remove some layers because they were perspiring. The west side of Shafreuter was wet from all the melting snow so there were some muddy parts which were tricky but not very challenging overall. At Leonhardiwand we took a small break and following a short mapping/navigation crash course from Matthias we headed South to meet the main road. At around 1420 meters we entered the gravel road and continued eastwards towards the top along the west face.

After leaving the road at around 1630m we made our way up heading south-east along the edge of Shafreuter. There were a few parts where scrambling was necessary and those without trekking poles had to grab onto muddy and slippery rocks with their gloves. The west side was so wet that sometimes it was hard to pull out one’s boot from the mud. We made a final break near Kälbereck around 1750m and prepared for the final attack. Everyone was a little tired by that time but their will did not falter. We ate something and set out for our final attack. Shortly after, the summit was visible and that gave us courage. The snow was now starting to pile up on the path and the wind was blowing bitterly cold. There was a short drizzle of rain.

After a final push we made it to the summit and enjoyed a spectacular view of the alps. The effort was more than worth it. We took many photos at the summit and ate the rest of our lunch. Following a long break at the top and a few unfortunate exchanges with some birds we made our way down past the Steinmandln towards the Tölzer Hüte. A quick tour of the winter room of the hut and we changed course due west, to cross the south face of Schafreuter and head home. The south side of the mountain was much more dry and we came across a pack of wild goats feeding carelessly in a meadow. After the end of the hike we had dinner at a local restaurant and headed home.

It's strange but just before reaching the top, overwhelmed by fatigue, I was praying for a helicopter to come pick me up and transport me to my bed. But now that I’m back home, getting back up there is all I can think about…

Bad Wiessee (train station) - Waxlmoosalm - Aueralm - Fockenstein - Lengries (train station)

Tour Details

From Bad Wiessee we walk a less trodden route via the the Waxlmoosalm to the Aueralm before hiking up to the Fockenstein. Hopefully from there we will be able to enjoy views across the Schliersee, Rofan, Karwendal and Wetterstein mountains (have a preview on what to expect at Peakfinder.org) We then head down the western side towards Lengries. The route takes us on a mix of tracks and hiking trails, with one short section on the way down from Fockenstein over some rocks, which will require a bit of scrambling. Due to the recent wet weather, there are parts that are likely to be quite muddy.

Detailed Description

We will start at Wildbad Kreuth (parking lot) near Tegernsee and hike to Schildenstein crossing the Wolfsschlucht. At the end of Wolfsschlucht a light scrambling passage awaits us. Predigtstuhl would be a small extension if we are motivated and fit enough.

Tour Overview

Geitau (train station) – Aiplspitz – Schoenfeldhuette (DAV) – Spitzingsattel – Josefsthaler Waterfalls – Fischhausen-Neuhaus (train station)

Detailed Description

The tour is a nice mixture of paths through woods, fields and mountain panorama with some meters of scrambling to reach the Aiplspitz from the train station in Gaitau.

On the descent to Fischhausen-Neuhaus we will pass the Josefsthaler Waterfalls and go back to Munich by Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB).
